Keane snaps at Wright after Declan Rice ‘good PR’ claim – ‘I played a bit in midfield’

Roy Keane didn’t take kindly to Ian Wright questioning his thoughts on West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

Rice captained the Hammers in defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday as Erik ten Hag’s side came from a goal down to win 3-1 at Old Trafford and progress through to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

And Keane was far from impressed with Rice’s display and his form of late in general, and wasn’t impressed by fellow pundit Ian Wright doubting his opinion.

Keane said on ITV: “I don’t think Rice has been great this season. I really don’t. He’s not really kicked on.

“For all the talk about him and the good PR coming out of West Ham, about how much money he is worth, I think he needs to do a lot more.

“Doesn’t get enough goals, doesn’t get enough assists…”

Surprised by Keane’s rant, Wright said: “Wow.”

Keane then glared at Wright, before responding: “Do you disagree with me? That’s good. I hope you disagree with me. Because I think I know what I’m talking about. I played a bit in midfield.”

Rice has just over a year left on his contract, though West Ham have the option to extend it by another year, and the England international has been linked with Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City in the last weeks and months.

It’s thought it would take a bid of at least £100m to persuade West Ham into parting with their skipper.

MAILBOX: Liverpool need Klopp now more than ever. Fergie never had it this hard…

Keane clearly isn’t convinced Rice is worth that outlay and was scathing of West Ham’s performance as a whole on Wednesday.

Keane said: “I have seen it all before. They come, get a bit giddy, have opportunities, not just West Ham, but the Spurs’ of this world, they get possession, one or two chances, they get plaudits, they end up getting beaten.

“Defensively West Ham were shocking, absolutely useless and gave away three goals. I have seen it over the years, but it’s laughable.”
