Fennel is an aromatic herb that could be used as a spice (usually the dried seeds), but there are also usage of fennel seeds and fennel oil in traditional medicine. Although there are many reported benefits of using fennel for various ailments such as relieving gut discomfort and colic, there are no well-designed clinical trials to support these claims. This is also true for diabetes. Studies conducted in rats with diabetes showed some improvement in blood sugar levels, but there are no human trials to prove this. Fennel could also potentially interfere with certain medications. Using fennel as an herb in general cooking will unlikely cause any issues, however using large dosages for medical or health reasons would not be advisable due to the lack of evidence of benefits and possible harm it might cause.
