Klopp tells Liverpool to produce ‘super game’ to down Real Madrid; offers fitness update on Nunez

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Liverpool will have to produce two “super games” to knock Real Madrid out of the Champions League at the knockout stages.

Liverpool come up against Real Madrid in the last-16 stage of the Champions League. The first leg takes place at Anfield on Tuesday night.

This fixture comes under a year after the 2022 Champions League final between the sides in Paris. This game was overshadowed by scenes before the game.

Thousands of Liverpool fans were refused entry into the Stade de France and were unfairly tear-gassed by French police. A report has concluded that this situation could have lead to a “mass fatality catastrophe”.

On the pitch, Liverpool were beaten 1-0 in the final with Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior netting the only goal. Reflecting on that game, Klopp suggested that his side “could have won” but he notes that both teams are “different” now.

“They are different games. One of the biggest clubs in the world. We played this final in Paris and I didn’t watch it back since then since this weekend. Now I know why I didn’t watch it!” Klopp told reporters on Monday.

“We could have won that game but didn’t. We come into this with more experience.

“Before that, we played at that training ground and in an empty stadium. We let them work hard. This is now different teams. That’s history.”

Liverpool come into Tuesday night’s games after beating Everton and Newcastle United. There is now more of a postive feeling around the club and Klopp “sees” that his side are gradually getting back to their best.

“I’m really happy we can play this game now rather than a few weeks ago. We need to play a super game. Two super games to be honest to get through. I have no problem with that,” Klopp added.

“We looked a lot more like a team again but we still have to prove that point. We need results, that’s without a shadow of a doubt. We were in a similar situation directly after World Cup, two wins, but it looks different now. We feel it and see it.”

Klopp continued: “We always work so hard for qualifying for the Champions League that I really think you have to cherish these moments.

“It will be a special game. I expect Anfield on their toes, to be honest. They saw us in better shape last two games, more things to look forward to.

“Real are always super, super competitive and super difficult to beat. But it makes absolute sense to try it anyway.

Darwin Nunez was forced off during Liverpool’s win over Newcastle with a shoulder injury. Klopp thinks he has a “chance” of playing against Real Madrid.

“There is a chance. We have to see how he is today. When we know that we will make a decision.”
