Salmon is considered healthy, since it provides proteins, vitamins, minerals and unsaturated fats such as omega-3, which help in maintenance of cardiovascular health. However, salmon have potentially unhealthy levels of pollutants and metals, such as arsenic, polychlorinated biphenyls and mercury, which is a neurotoxin that can pass through the placenta and affect fetal development. There are numerous associations between mercury intake and cancer, diabetes and heart disease. According to Food and Drug Administration, pregnant women should limit fish consumption to one serving per week.
