There are two types of hiatal hernias. The most common are sliding hiatal hernias, which means the upper part of the stomach slips above the diaphragm into the chest. Many people have no symptoms. But having this type makes it more likely that the person will have acid reflux causing heartburn.

Hiatus hernia is defined as herniation of abdominal contents through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm. It is broadly divided into two types, called sliding hernia and para esophageal hernia. Risk factors like trauma, congenital malformation, and iatrogenic factors play an important role in a sliding type of hiatal hernia whereas surgical dissection of the hiatus can lead to a para esophageal hernia. Complications of hiatus hernia include severe gastroesophageal reflux disease, strangulation of hernia, pneumonia.
