Chelsea poised for big decision over star man as club ‘resigned’ to idea over his future

Some people at Chelsea are reportedly ‘resigned’ to Mason Mount not wanting to ‘sign up to the project’, which will lead to a big decision in the summer.

Mount’s numbers since he made the step up to senior football with Chelsea are not to be sniffed at. Indeed, the attacking-midfield star has been directly involved in 70 goals in 188 games for the side.

His best return came last season, when he bagged 11 league goals and provided 10 assists in 32 games.

This season, he’s been directly involved in five goals in 21 games. He remains an important member of the squad, despite the influx of new signings over the last year.

Indeed, the Englishman has started 19 of Chelsea’s 22 league games this season. Despite his importance to the side, his future at the club is in doubt.

Indeed, early on in February, Mount reportedly rejected a new contract as the terms were ‘below what other senior players and new signings’ were earning.

While he’s not the most consistent of performers, it seems fair that one of Chelsea’s most influential players in recent seasons would want to be paid in line with that.

However, a new update shows the situation in a different light. Indeed, The Daily Telegraph football reporter Mike McGrath reports there has been ‘no breakthrough in talks’.

He continues to say some at the club are ‘resigned to him not wanting to sign up to the project going forward’. If there’s no breakthrough soon, he says a decision will be made in the summer.

Indeed, Mount is out of contract in 2024, so making a decision soon gives them time to do what needs to be done. What’s more, there’s still time for him to make a decision on a contract himself.

However, with a host of new faces coming into the club, it’s not a surprise that an established star might be getting cold feet. That’s especially true if people who have not contributed to the club in recent years are being paid better than him.

With that being said, it actually wouldn’t be a massive loss for the Blues if he was to leave. Indeed, they’ve got a good deal of attacking talent, and they have shown of late they can simply sign more if they want to.

As such, if Mount doesn’t want to be a part of the club, they’d likely be happy to see the back of him and have some money coming back in.
