Onions are usually larger than shallots and have a more intense flavour. Shallots have a sweet, delicate flavour. Onions may be somewhat lower in calories than shallots. However, shallots have a bit more fiber and a few nutrients like vitamin C and folate.

Shallots are little sweeter than onions and have more subtle flavor. They are mostly used in salads and vinaigrettes, it enhances the flavor of the dish and doesn’t water it down. Shallots are rich in B6 vitamins, manganese, copper, folate and vitamin C.

Nutritionally, both shallots and onions have same values yet they slightly differ in the flavor. Shallots have a sweet flavor with low intensity heat whereas onions have more intense heat. Both the variants can be used for cooking purposes and can also be eaten raw.
