When taken by mouth coffee is likely safe for most healthy adults if consumed in moderate amounts (about 4 cups each day). Coffee containing caffeine can result in insomnia, nervousness and restlessness, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, increased heart and breathing rate and other side effects. Drinking large amounts of caffeinated coffee may bring about headache, anxiety, agitation, ringing in the ears and irregular heartbeats.
