After quitting the Royal Family in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan temporarily moved to Canada but then moved to the US with their child, Archie. They finally settled in Montecito, California. There, the couple brought a nine-bedroom house for $14.65 million. However, it turns out the house was worth a lot more than that.
Prince Harry and Meghan couldn’t afford the house
In an interview with The Cut, Meghan Markle opens up about her house hunt with Prince Harry as they relocated to the US.
Meghan talked about the hardship they found when house hunting and how they had fallen in love with the Montecito home but couldn’t afford it. Meghan explained:
We were looking in this area (Montecito, California) and this house kept popping up online in searches.
However, since neither of them ‘have jobs’ they originally refused to visit the home as it was priced at $14.65 million.
We didn’t have jobs, so we were just not going to come and see this house. It wasn’t possible. It’s like when I was younger and you’re window shopping—it’s like, I don’t want to go and look at all the things that I can’t afford—that doesn’t feel good.
She then explained that together they did ‘everything they could’ to secure the home for themselves. For them, this home was a place they felt happy and calm:
It’s healing; you feel free.

The Montecito home was cut by $10 million
Forbes journalist Carlie Porterfield revealed that the Montecito home is actually worth $10 million more than the price it was sold to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as reported by Express.
Carlie Porterfield revealed:
The former owner purchased it for about $10million more and was trying to sell it to obviously make a profit.
He wasn’t able to so he took about a $10million cut.
The couple then signed their deal with Netflix for their documentary in order to help pay for the mortgage.
